Thanks for these thoughtful reflections and illuminating examples. I so appreciate the focus on moral responsibility we see in Jane Austen’s writings through a meaningful synthesis of the Neoclassical and Romantic philosophies that shaped the era in which she lived. Many modern adaptations of Austen’s writings are so weighted in the Romantic camp that the balancing mechanism of Enlightenment thought is lost, very unfortunate given the influence of this perspective on projections of ethical awareness shaped by humility in her novels.
