A superb overview of human culture marred by nihilism, a philosophy profoundly destructive, yet as someone else had said, worthy of study. Using the background of the ancient poem, Beowulf, Walker, thankfully, gives a clear brief review of the pertinent classic work, then deftly compares the culture of today. Outside of God, is there hope for modern culture? Walker says that there is, and I agree with him, but a nagging nihilistic pall says not really. It may be too late. I’ve long disliked the study of nihilism. Now I’m off to pick up a copy of Beowulf, in modern English of course, for the rest of the long-forgotten story/poem.
Thank you for the appreciative and thoughtful comment. Outside of God, I would say there isn't hope for modern culture, but not because the nihilists are right about the world (they're not), only because the nihilists and Grendels have control of Heorot Hall (for the time-being). I do believe, however, that the day will come when we put the darkness of "modern philosophy" behind us and begin to believe in reality again. It will happen. It must happen. But by what means, God only knows. Enjoy your reading of Beowulf!
